As a Filipino-American, I've always been fascinated by the myths and legends that make up Filipino mythology. One of the first stories I heard about our creatures is the manananggal, which is why it's also the first plushie we released!
Growing up, stories of the manananggal would be whispered during late-night gatherings with family and friends. This creature is said to be a woman by day, but when night falls, she transforms into a monster. The most common aspect of the manananggal is its ability to detach its upper torso from its lower body, sprout bat-like wings, and take to the skies in search of victims.
Legend has it that the manananggal has a preference for pregnant women and their unborn children. Some stories speak of its sharp claws and a thirst for various human entrails, stealthily approaching houses before it strikes its victims. Different regions speak of the manananggal's different...tastes and appetites. Because of this, it is one of the most feared entities in Filipino mythology.
Filipino folklore is rife with stories of how communities protect themselves from the manananggal's wrath. Garlic, salt, and vinegar (adobo?!) are believed to repel these creatures. It is also said that the only way to kill it is by locating the lower half of the creature's body and sprinkling salt over the exposed flesh.
The story of the manananggal has not been confined solely to folklore. It has also made its way into Filipino horror films, books, and even video games, further perpetuating the aura surrounding it.
