In a village by the sea lived a beautiful young girl named Juana. Her parents, especially her father, were very protective of her, especially as she grew older and suitors came to meet her.
One of her suitors was a very handsome young man named Aging. They spent a lot of time together, growing their friendship into something deeper. They fell in love.
When Juana's father found out, he was enraged! He forbade Juana to see Aging or any man again.
Juana cried, telling Aging the news. He wiped away her tears and promised her that they will find a way to see each other. And they did. Day after day and night after night, they met in secret.
Until one day, Juana's father caught Aging waiting outside Juana's window. Juana ran outside to try to stop her father...but it was too late. He had grabbed a bolo, swung at Aging, and cut his arm off!
Aging ran away, never to be seen again. Heartbroken, Juana picked up Aging's arm and buried it by her window. She spend many nights weeping over the grave, watering it with her tears.
One morning, she peeked outside her window and saw something growing out of the grave. It was a tall green tree with yellow fruit. Her mom and dad asked what it could be. Juana smiled, saying it was a gift from Aging.
When Juana and her mother tasted the fruit, they marveled at its sweetness. When her father tasted it, however, he tasted regret. He then asked Juana for her forgiveness.
From that time on, the tall green tree with clusters or yellow fruit became known as "aging," later known as "saging," or the Tagalog word for banana.
